When we moved to our new apartment, which was bigger than the one where we used to live before, we had already decided we wouldn’t buy new furnitures to fill all the empty spaces there was probably going to be. One of the reasons we changed apartment was the mold, that was starting to disturb us (it sounds worse than it probably was, but still…). After some months of research we found a perfect apartment, in an island close to the city center, but still in a VERY quiet area. The icing on the cake was that the apartment building was a passive house, that is a building with a very low ecological footprint because of its amazing energy efficiency. We loved it from the first time we saw it and decided to move in.

Finnish apartments are quite sterile. Mainly all white, square shapes and no decoration whatsoever. Usually they have an installed kitchen (most probably white) but no other furniture. Now, the only places where I remember to have seen white walls in Italy are hospitals and schools. So, as you might guess, I come from a background were white walls are considered boring and not fitting for a home. In the house where I grew up I remember to have seen the walls in at least these colors: lilac, yellow, primrose, orange, mint, sienna, blush pink, violet and beige. When I came to Finland, though, I started to understand this obsession with white. It’s a very simple reason, actually; Finland is just so dark, that one tries to get inside all the light possible.

Even though we understand the need of white to bring light during the dark months, we still try to bring some rustic into our home to take away the new and sterile effect. Also, we like to be sustainable, as you may have already noticed from our balcony project (here the links to the first part of the project and to the second part). Why to buy new stuff, when there is so much in the world that could be recycled, transformed and repurposed into something new and practical? Living sustainable can be seen in so many things, from where you choose to live to what you try to eat.

We have always loved the idea of Moroccan leather poufs, for various reasons. These poufs have a beautiful design, are super practical and extremely endurable. Zoco Home is a Finnish company that ship worldwide, specialized in Moroccan design and home decor. If you want to bring some Moroccan rustic style into your home, you are in the right hands with them. What we especially loved about their poufs is that they come empty, which means that there is no waste in delivering kilos of filling and that you can recycle all your old clothes + blankets + pillows and just fill the poufs with them. My mother in law was very happy to get rid of some worn out old clothes and blankets, that really couldn’t have been used any other way. These Moroccan poufs have a practical wide zipper in the bottom that makes it easy to fill them.

As aforementioned, one can be sustainable in many ways. In the future posts we’ll show you in what other ways we were sustainable in decorating our living room. Stay tuned and subscribe to our newsletter to receive updates directly by email when a new post is published!
